Pesach is an event that took place over 3,000 years ago when the Jewish people were freed from slavery under a corrupt society. But why do we still celebrate Pesach today? Chassidus explains that Pesach is not merely a historical event that happened to our ancestors—it is a spiritual journey that occurs within every Jewish soul in every generation.
The Jewish soul is a part of G-d Himself. Before it enters the body, it experiences indescribable pleasure in Gan Eden (Heaven). However, once it descends into the physical world, it no longer feels that divine pleasure. In this way, the soul within the body is like the Jewish people in Egypt—trapped and yearning for freedom. Just as G-d redeemed the Jews from Egypt, it is the mission of every Jew, with G-d’s help, to elevate the soul and free it from its own personal Egypt.
